Adoption Corner: Jack the Dachshund!

adopt foster Miami

-Update- Jack was adopted in December of 2014! We couldn’t be happier!

Looking for the perfect companion on a rainy day? Jack the Dachshund is an expert snuggler and would be happy to share his talents with you. We have been fostering him for several months and love his gentle disposition. You can see how sweet he is by his expressions- Mr. Jack is so soulful and wants to be loved. Love to him means lots of belly rubs, snuggling, yummy treats, naps next to you, games, a comfy bed, and a home for the rest of his life.

Mr. Jack was brought to the Dachshund Rescue of South Florida as a stray. Someone decided to dock his tail; while Dachshunds don’t usually sport short tails, Jack think it makes him look dashing and cool (he always looks on the bright side of life!). His profile states that he prefers humans to dogs. We can say wholeheartedly that he does, in fact, love to play with dogs his size. We have helped him adapt to other pups and you can see in the video below that he has a lot of fun with his fellow Doxies (short for Dachshund).

Jack spends his days snuggling with Boots, Frankie’s Shih Tzu, and Snoop, one of our clients Dachshunds. He is very playful with them. We have observed that he does not like to have larger dogs towering over him or playing roughly with him- and who can blame him? He’s a little guy! But he does do well with his friends, as you can see in this video.

Our little nugget loves to eat, but is not incredibly food-driven. He also does not appear to be territorial. He does, however, prefer to hang out with you as much as possible. He is the first one to run up next to a human whenever we all go out to play as a pack.

Jack is in great health, has a soft, short coat, and is house- and crate-trained. He really appreciates soft pillows and belly rubs while he catches some zzzz’s. We recommend Jack for a house with another happy, small dog, or with older children who can be gentle with him.

Before you adopt Jack, we’d like you to read an excerpt from the Dachshund Rescue of South Florida page in order to determine whether a Dachshund is the right pet for you. You can fill out an application form after you click on the link.

Step 1…..Is a Rescue Doxie Right for You?

  • Are you IVDD Savvy and know what symptoms to look for?  Would you choose conservative treatment or surgical?  Our friends at Dodgerslist (www.dodgerslist.com) are the best online resource for IVDD as well as the best place for doxie families to read up and be prepared to face IVDD.  We encourage all families to familiarize themselves with IVDD as plans for treatment factor into the application process.   Insurance is a huge resource to have in place for working through IVDD.  See the side bar to the left to learn more about Trupanion, DRSF’s insurance partner.
  • Doxies can live to be 18 years old and we look for forever families who are ready to make a lifetime commitment to their newest family member.
  • We very seldom have puppies come into rescue as they are the ones that get scooped up first from the shelters. The dogs that come into our care (and we feel are the most beautiful) are the ones that were passed over at the shelters for various reasons, and without a rescue to go to they would be euthanized. Our Foster Families give us good information on the personality and character of our dogs, allowing us to match your family with a really great pet. Please consider opening your heart a bit further than you might have anticipated in being open to finding your perfect match: a “differently-abled” Doxie or a senior dog could be the perfect pet for you and our expert doxie matchmakers can guide you to a perfect match

Benny Is Looking for His Furever Home

Doggie adoption

Benny Needs Companionship — Foster Benny Today!

One of the members of our Equipaws pack, Benny, is looking for a foster home. Benny has been living essentially alone for about two months now, with his only company being his Equipaws friends, due to trouble in his family. He is a very sweet and loving dog and longs for human contact and affection.

He is up to date on all of his shots, is clean, and has no fleas or ticks. He is a healthy 40 to 50 pound mix breed with tan & black fur, and intense, beautiful brown eyes. Benny thrives on companionship, love, and affection, and loves to give his Equipaws friends kisses and get scratches on his head and haunches. He makes friends often on the elevator with other tenants of the building in which he lives.

Benny is about 7 years old and has a lot of energy. Because he was never neutered, it is best for him to find a home with no other pets. He is slightly reactive with other dogs and other animals in general. However, he does love people and would make a wonderful companion.

Benny’s energy is on display during his morning and evening walks with us. In fact, many of our walkers and runners often run with him to get some of that pent-up energy out. However, his sweet and loving nature makes it clear that he is a wonderful companion to have at home, to curl up by your feet while you read or watch television.

Oftentimes, he will only eat if someone is by his side. It really breaks our hearts to see poor Benny living all by himself. We are desperate to find him a loving foster home.Would you consider giving this handsome little guy a home? Do you know someone who might? Please contact us today! Help us help sweet Benny!

Please call 305.794.3733 if you’re interested in fostering or adopting him today!

Dog Adoption Event in Downtown Dadeland

dog friendly events Miami Downtown Dadeland

There are tons of fun, dog-friendly events throughout Miami in April, and we have our paws in lots of them! We’re happy that West Elm Dadeland approached us to put on a pet-friendly event at their Dadeland store on April 13, 2014. The Downtown Dadeland area is very pet-friendly; the condos allow cats and dogs, and the store encourages paw traffic. Add that all up and it equals the perfect spot for a dog-friendly mixer!

Together, we are putting on a Doggy Adoption Fair to find forever homes for a few lucky dogs from Friends Forever Rescue. So, whether you would like to adopt and rescue a dog, or bring you own furry friend along, join West Elm Dadeland for their very first Doggy Adoption Fair in their store:

Where: 8805 Dadeland Boulevard, Miami, FL 33156

When: April 13, 2014, 12-4 pm!

It will be the perfect place for those living in the South Miami, Pinecrest, and Falls area to meet local, pet-centric vendors to fulfill all your pets’ needs.

Doggy Adoption Fair Roll Call:

We rely on volunteers to foster and transport our dogs. Our dogs are featured on Petfinder.com. Each Saturday, we bring our dogs to Petsmart in the Falls (US 1 and SW 136th Street) from 10am to 4pm.

Prospective families are encouraged to come to Petsmart to meet and interact with the dogs.

All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

These shirts are beautiful, designed by local animal lovers who not only adopt dogs in need, but also work closely with another great dog rescue, Paws 4 You Rescue. The best part? Applause Your Paws, Inc. Training: When you need a quality dog trainer in Miami, you want to meet them! We are very happy to have them at the event, as we believe dogs deserve and need an education as much as humans do. We can’t wait for you to see the benefits of positive reinforcement training!
