Coconut Grove Pet Sitter Spotlight: Mike Tacoronte

Meet the newest Coconut Grove pet sitter in our pack, Mike Tacoronte, who will be walking, running and caring for your pets in the dog-friendly Coconut Grove and Coral Gables neighborhoods! Mike served in the U.S. Air Force for 20 years and is now a retired veteran filling his time with volunteer work and animal-oriented activities. Although he has a tough exterior, his big heart and soft spot for animals has made him a perfect fit for our team!

Mike has had the opportunity to volunteer at several animal shelters across the country including in Anchorage, Alaska, San Antonio, Texas and locally here in Doral. “I volunteered at pet shelters because I wanted to get as many dogs as possible out of their cages for at least a few minutes of the day, so they could stretch their legs and play for a while,” Mike tells us. One of his life goals is to keep dogs active and fit, even if they are confined to a shelter.

As fitness plays an important role for Mike, he finds great passion in walking, playing and running with pups. After he began volunteering with the Miami-Dade Animal Services he discovered our company from a neighbor. “I couldn’t believe that I can do what I love AND get paid!” Mike exclaims. He loves the idea of providing a customized service for dogs, while getting them out and about when pet parents are working or on vacation. He believes regular exercise is crucial to the pet’s well-being, so when he found out our motto was “Fit, healthy, happy!” it was a total match.

We’re lucky to have him in our pack not only as a passionate animal lover serving as a Coconut Grove pet sitter, but also as an avid photographer. Mike focuses his Canon rebel SLR camera on dogs and fitness-oriented models. Mike also practices Movement Culture, which is a free-flowing style of exercise containing elements of breakdance, gymnastics, capoeira, and other arts.

Dog-Walker Dog Toy Tips

When he is off duty, Mike and his Mom share pup parenting for an adorable Schnauzer mix named Charchael. She is a cuddle bug who loves his attention! Mike’s personal favorite and go-to toy for Charchael is the Chuckit. He also uses the Zipflight frisbee with Charchael who loves to catch in mid-air and play tug-o-war! Bonus feature: dogs can’t tear this item to shreds. Mike says, “It’s really sturdy and strong…for most dogs.” He would recommend these toys to any pup parent.

Mike clearly believes dogs are the best thing out there, and so do we! If you see him in the neighborhood feel free to stop and say hello. Mike is looking forward to his days filled with our Equipaws canine family!

Top 10 Reasons to Hire a Dog Walker in Miami

You may have seen our dog walkers having fun with our pet clients around Brickell, Downtown Miami, or Coconut Grove. Chances are, you’ve probably thought about hiring a dog walker yourself at some point. Maybe you’ve had an unusually long day at the office that kept you away from home, or you’ve had to turn down happy hour invitations so you can rush home to relieve your pooch. Maybe this doesn’t happen often… and then, maybe it happens too much and you’re left wondering whether you should have hired a dog walker months ago.

We think you probably should! Aside from relieving your mental stress of leaving your pup alone for eight hours at a time, your dog really benefits from daily breaks, exercise, and tender loving care. Dogs crave companionship, playtime, and a good exercise session (tailored to each dog’s individual needs; for example, English Bulldog puppies need to tread carefully). Regular stimulation, exercise, and companionship help shape your dog into the best he or she can be, and leave them relaxed and eager to snuggle and spend quality time with you when you return home.

There are plenty of reasons to hire a dog walker, but you especially might want to hire a professional dog walker if:

  1. You work full time, or leave your dog home alone for long periods of time. Just like humans, dogs need to relieve themselves throughout the day, and should not hold it for more than 6 hours.
  2. You have a new puppy in your home! Puppies that are potty training MUST be let out more often than older dogs in order to help potty train them and avoid accidents. Puppy potty times increase with age: a 1 month old puppy can typically hold it an hour, a 2-month-old 2 hours, and so on.
  3. You prefer to not leave your dog at a doggy daycare. We understand that some of our pet parents don’t want to expose their dogs to disease or fights, and while many of the dog daycare facilities are reputable and excellent locations, this is a personal choice.
  4. Your dog is gaining weight due to lack of exercise while eating the recommended daily amount of food.
  5. Your dog is acting out, chewing your tables, favorite shoes, or showing compulsive, repetitive behaviors.
  6. You don’t leave out pee pads for your pup and don’t leave access to a fenced-in yard for bathroom relief. Keep in mind older animals sometimes need relief more often due to their prescription medications and general health.
  7. You are unable to walk your dog yourself due to physical circumstances, be it illness, surgery, or anything else. Some older clients adopted bully breeds and need us to tire out these athletic dogs for them!
  8. You keep finding accidents throughout your house despite training and limiting of water and food.
  9. You want an experienced professional who is licensed, bonded, and insured, and who is trained in handling dogs on the street, as well as in pet CPR and first aid.
  10. You love your dog and want her to be entertained, enriched, and cared for as your own child would be.

If any of the above reasons resonate with you, our dog walkers are happy to help! We will be your pups’ companions and teachers while you’re away at work (or even play and vacation), so that they blossom into the best pups they can be. Our pet sitters and dog walkers have taken dogs out for fun breaks, walks, and runs in many neighborhoods, including: Brickell, Downtown Miami, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, South Miami, Pinecrest, and Palmetto Bay. Dog Friendly Parks Coconut Grove

Dog Friendly Parks, Coconut Grove, FL

After indulging in all that food & drink in the uber dog-friendly Coconut Grove restaurants, you and your furry friend would really benefit from a nice walk! Our pet sitters have enjoyed every park below in their very serious research on dog-fun. Please enjoy these pawsome dog friendly parks in Miami!

The Barnacle Historic State Park:

Between the hours of 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, The Barnacle is a beautiful and quiet walk you’ll both enjoy! As with all Florida state parks, please be sure your pup is leashed and that you clean up after her. Lush with history, the Barnacle (built in 1891) offers a glimpse into old Florida the second you step into the native hammock that once dominated the area’s landscape. After coming upon Commodore Munroe’s house, there is a vast expanse with shade trees under which you and your pup and sit and take a quiet rest away from the city’s noise. The view of Biscayne Bay from here is absolutely beautiful, so prepare for your zen moment of the day.

Peacock Park:

Known as the “ground zero” of any Coconut Grove festival, Peacock Park is always buzzing with one thing or another – from evening kickball games to children playing after school, this park is always lively. You can enjoy a nice, leisurely, grassy stroll with your pup on your way to Bayside Park. Please be sure to have your poop bags with you and always clean up after your furry pal in this cute, dog friendly park!

Kenneth M. Meyers Bayside Park:

Where McFarlane Road turns into a footpath and gives way to Bayshore Drive, Peacock Park gives way to Meyers Bayside Park. You’ve driven by it before, with its outdoor gym equipment and funny metal giraffe. It’s a nice park to stroll through with your pup. You can look out onto the bay at the boats and, if boats are your thing, you can continue strolling northeast to walk along the marina.

DogPark @ David T. Kennedy Park:

Further northeast up Bayshore Drive is David T. Kennedy Park. Named after a less famous (and probably less scandalous) Kennedy, this park is the home of Coconut Grove’s official dog park, so if Fido is feeling social, this is the place to go! As with most dog parks, Kennedy Park has two separate fenced in areas for larger and smaller dogs. Dog owners can let their dogs roam leash-free to sniff around and make some friends. As with all dog parks, please be aware of your surroundings, your dog’s activities, and surrounding pooches.  Safety first!

Don’t have time to take your pooch to any of these dog friendly parks? Our dog walkers live in Coconut Grove and would be happy to take your pup out for a break, walk, or run!
